Much of that understanding has grown through years of photographing the landscapes, wildlife, architecture, and cultural life of Deoghar and Jharkhand, alongside professional work that ranges from carefully planned maternity and portrait sessions to fast-paced ceremonies, conceptual storytelling, commercial commissions, and other assignments where every subject, environment, and client presents a different creative and technical challenge.

Photography, to me, has never been defined solely by the equipment I use or the photographs I create. It is shaped by a way of thinking that continually connects theory with experience. Understanding how light behaves, how lenses influence perspective, how changing environments affect photographic decisions, and how careful observation often reveals moments that cannot be anticipated through technical settings alone has gradually shaped my approach to photography. Over time, these experiences have reinforced a simple belief: every successful photograph is guided not by a single decision, but by many thoughtful choices working together.
Behind the Photograph
Every finished photograph is the outcome of many interconnected decisions made before, during, and after the moment of capture. This section explores the thought process, technical reasoning, and creative choices that transform a scene into a meaningful photograph.
A photograph rarely begins when the shutter is released. It often starts much earlier—with understanding the subject, studying the environment, anticipating changing light, selecting appropriate equipment, and deciding how technical accuracy can best support the intended visual story. During the moment of capture, countless decisions involving composition, exposure, focus, perspective, timing, and lighting work together. Afterwards, careful RAW processing helps preserve what was genuinely experienced in the field rather than creating something that never existed. Looking beyond the finished image reveals that every successful photograph is the result of thoughtful preparation, informed judgement, and a sequence of deliberate decisions, each contributing to the final outcome.
Field Experiences
Every photographic environment presents its own combination of light, subjects, terrain, weather, and human interaction. Field experience is where photographic knowledge is continuously tested, refined, and transformed into practical judgement. Every location, subject, and assignment presents its own combination of opportunities and challenges, requiring the photographer to adapt rather than rely on fixed formulas. The understanding developed through theory provides an essential foundation, but working in real environments reveals how scientific principles, technical decisions, creative intent, and human interaction come together under constantly changing conditions.
Many of the lessons that have shaped my approach originated while photographing birds and wildlife. Fast-moving subjects, unpredictable behaviour, changing weather, dense forests, difficult mountain terrain, backlit scenes, and rapidly shifting light demanded far more than familiarity with camera settings. They required a deeper understanding of exposure, autofocus behaviour, subject movement, optics, environmental light, and the ability to make well-reasoned decisions within fractions of a second.
Over time, these demanding experiences influenced far more than wildlife photography alone. The ability to recognise changing light quickly, anticipate movement, evaluate a scene, reposition instinctively, and adjust camera settings without interrupting the creative process gradually became transferable skills. Those same principles now support my work across portraits, ceremonies, weddings, commercial assignments, and other professional genres, where every situation presents its own unique combination of technical, environmental, and human factors.
Every field experience therefore becomes more than an opportunity to create photographs. It becomes an opportunity to strengthen observation, test theoretical understanding, refine technical judgement, and develop the confidence to respond thoughtfully to situations that cannot be rehearsed or repeated. Each experience contributes another layer to an evolving body of photographic knowledge that continues to shape the way I work today.

Technical knowledge becomes truly valuable when it helps explain why a particular photographic decision succeeds under real conditions. Understanding the behaviour of light, optical principles, exposure, camera sensor characteristics, autofocus systems, colour management, and RAW image processing provides a reliable foundation for making thoughtful decisions that support the intended visual outcome.
Over the years, I have found that technical understanding develops most effectively through the continuous interaction between theory and practical experience. Studying photographic principles provides the scientific framework, while working in varied environments reveals how those principles behave under changing conditions. Whether balancing ambient light with off-camera flash, preserving highlight detail in challenging wildlife scenes, reproducing accurate colours for commercial photography, or adapting autofocus behaviour to unpredictable subjects, technical knowledge becomes meaningful because it helps solve genuine photographic challenges.
Rather than existing as isolated concepts, scientific understanding, field experience, and creative judgement continually influence one another. Portrait Lighting and the Law of Reflection
While photographing portraits and family photographs, clients often wear spectacles that can produce distracting reflections from studio lighting. Instead of asking them to remove their glasses, I first consider how the law of reflection influences the path of light. By carefully adjusting the direction of the light source, together with subtle changes to the subject's head position and the angle of the spectacles, reflections can usually be redirected away from the camera. This simple application of optical principles helps preserve a natural portrait while allowing the subject to appear exactly as they do in everyday life.
Understanding Light
Every photograph begins with light. Its direction, intensity, quality, and colour influence how a scene is recorded long before any camera settings are adjusted. This section explores how understanding the behaviour of light helps transform technical decisions into deliberate creative choices across different photographic situations.
Light is the primary medium of photography, yet it is often the least understood. A camera records only the light that reaches its sensor, making the photographer's ability to observe, interpret, and control light one of the most important skills in the entire photographic process. Understanding how light behaves enables informed decisions about exposure, contrast, texture, depth, colour, and the overall visual character of a photograph.
My understanding of light has developed through the continuous combination of theoretical study and practical experience. Principles of optics and lighting physics explain how light travels, reflects, diffuses, and changes under different environmental conditions. Practical experience then reveals how these principles behave in real situations, whether working with natural daylight, controlled artificial lighting, mixed illumination, or challenging outdoor environments.
Rather than treating light as something to be corrected later during post-processing, I consider it an essential part of photographic planning. Evaluating light before releasing the shutter helps determine how subjects will be illuminated, how backgrounds will appear, how textures will be revealed, and how the final photograph can communicate the intended visual mood while remaining technically accurate.

Portrait Lighting and the Law of Reflection
Although this portrait appears naturally lit, it was created by carefully balancing daylight with controlled off-camera lighting. A Godox AD300 Pro was used as the primary light source, while a Godox TT685 Speedlight provided subtle separation between the subjects and the background by acting as a hair light.
Because the primary light source can easily produce unwanted reflections on spectacles, the law of reflection became an important practical consideration. Instead of asking the family members to remove their glasses, I made small adjustments to the direction of the key light, together with subtle changes to the position of their heads and the angle of their spectacles. These simple refinements redirected the reflected light away from the camera, eliminating distracting glare while preserving the subjects' natural appearance.

In Practice
Balancing Daylight with Off-Camera Lighting
Outdoor portraits often require a careful balance between the existing daylight and additional artificial lighting. If the ambient light dominates, the subject may appear underexposed. Conversely, excessive flash output can overpower the natural environment, producing an artificial appearance.
To maintain this balance, I first measure the ambient light using a Sekonic L-308 Light Meter before adjusting the output of my off-camera strobes. By controlling both the daylight exposure and the flash intensity independently, it becomes possible to preserve the atmosphere of the surroundings while ensuring that the subjects remain naturally illuminated. Rather than replacing natural light, the additional lighting complements it, producing photographs that retain environmental context without compromising accurate subject exposure.
This example illustrates how understanding the behaviour of light extends beyond exposure alone. Scientific principles, combined with careful observation and practical experience, help transform technical knowledge into confident photographic decisions that improve both the visual quality and authenticity of the final photograph.
Understanding Colour
Accurate colour is more than visual appearance. It depends on the interaction between light, camera sensors, white balance, colour temperature, and RAW image processing. This section explores how colour science helps ensure that photographs faithfully represent the subject while supporting the intended creative interpretation.
Colour is one of the most powerful elements of photography, yet it is also one of the easiest to misrepresent. The colours recorded by a camera are influenced not only by the subject itself but also by the characteristics of the light source, colour temperature, camera sensor response, white balance settings, and the subsequent processing of RAW image data.
Developing an understanding of colour requires both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Concepts such as colour temperature, white balance, colour calibration, sensor behaviour, and colour management explain why the same subject can appear noticeably different under changing lighting conditions. Practical photography then demonstrates how these principles can be applied to produce photographs that remain both visually pleasing and faithful to the original scene.
Whether photographing commercial products, portraits, wildlife, or natural landscapes, I consider colour accuracy to be an essential part of the photographic process. While creative interpretation certainly has its place, preserving authentic colours is often equally important, particularly when photographs are intended to document, represent, or accurately reproduce real subjects.

In Practice
Achieving Accurate Colour Through Colour Calibration
During commercial garment photography, clients expect the finished photographs to represent the original colours of the products as accurately as possible. Even small colour shifts introduced by changing light conditions or incorrect white balance can misrepresent the product and affect customer expectations.
To establish a reliable colour reference, I photograph a calibrated Grey Card under the same lighting conditions before beginning the session. Since I always photograph in RAW (NEF) format, this reference allows white balance and colour accuracy to be adjusted consistently during post-processing without degrading image quality. Rather than relying on automatic camera settings alone, this workflow combines controlled lighting, colour calibration, and RAW processing to produce photographs that faithfully represent the actual appearance of the garments.
Exposure & Metering
Exposure is not simply about brightness. It is the process of deciding how a camera should interpret the light within a scene while recognising the physical limitations of its imaging sensor. This section explores how metering systems, dynamic range, and informed exposure decisions work together to preserve the details that matter most.
Every photographic scene contains a range of brightness values that the camera attempts to measure and record. Modern metering systems analyse this information to recommend an exposure, but they cannot determine which areas of the scene are most important to the photographer. Understanding how different metering methods interpret light allows exposure to become a deliberate creative and technical decision rather than an automatic camera function.
Developing this understanding requires an appreciation of concepts such as reflected light measurement, dynamic range, highlight preservation, shadow detail, and the behaviour of camera sensors under different lighting conditions. Practical experience then teaches when the camera's default interpretation is sufficient and when it becomes necessary to override it in order to protect important tonal information within the photograph.
Rather than aiming simply for a correctly exposed image, I try to preserve the visual information that contributes most to the final photograph. In high-contrast situations, this often means protecting delicate highlight detail that cannot easily be recovered once it has been permanently clipped during capture.

In Practice
Protecting Highlight Detail in Bright Wildlife Conditions
While photographing migratory birds at Naukhil Pond during winter, I observed two Cattle Egrets suddenly begin fighting above the water shortly after sunrise. The low-angle morning sunlight illuminated their white plumage from the side while simultaneously reflecting from the surface of the pond, creating a scene with exceptionally bright highlights.
Recognising that Matrix Metering could overexpose the delicate feather detail, I immediately switched to Highlight-weighted Metering using the dedicated function controls I had previously configured on my Nikon Z9. By prioritising highlight preservation before releasing the shutter, the camera retained subtle feather texture while also preserving tonal detail in the illuminated water below. This decision demonstrates how understanding both the scene and the camera's metering behaviour can produce results that would be difficult to recover through post-processing alone.

Exposure Decisions Over Reflective Water
On another winter morning at Naukhil Pond, I observed two Bar-headed Geese interacting on brightly illuminated water, with one bird suddenly lifting its wings and splashing the surface. The combination of predominantly white plumage, strong reflections from the water, and airborne droplets created a scene containing several bright highlight areas that could easily have been overexposed.
Recognising this before releasing the shutter, I switched from Matrix Metering to Highlight-weighted Metering using the customised controls on my Nikon Z9. By prioritising highlight preservation at the moment of capture, the camera retained subtle feather texture, detail within the reflective water, and even the fine tonal structure of the splashing droplets. Rather than correcting an overexposed image later, the exposure was managed in-camera, demonstrating how an understanding of metering behaviour and sensor limitations leads to more reliable results under demanding lighting conditions.
Focus & Subject Tracking
Achieving consistently sharp photographs requires more than fast autofocus. It depends on recognising subject behaviour, selecting an appropriate focusing strategy, and knowing when to guide the camera's tracking system. This section explores how observation, autofocus technology, and photographer judgement work together to maintain focus on moving subjects.
Modern autofocus systems are capable of remarkable speed and accuracy, particularly when combined with subject recognition powered by artificial intelligence. However, successful focusing still depends on the photographer making informed decisions before the camera begins tracking. Selecting the appropriate autofocus mode, anticipating subject movement, and understanding when to override automation all contribute to achieving reliable focus in dynamic situations.
Rather than relying on a single autofocus mode for every photograph, I configure my cameras so that different focusing strategies can be accessed instantly through customised controls. This allows autofocus behaviour to adapt to the subject and environment rather than forcing every situation into the same workflow.

In Practice
Acquiring Focus Before Tracking
While photographing birds & wildlife at the marshy wetlands of Pocharam Dam Reservoir, Hyderabad, Telangana, I was observing several small waterbirds when a Northern Shoveler suddenly flew rapidly into the frame from my left. The bird was small, fast, and approaching over dense vegetation, leaving very little time to react.
Although Nikon's 3D Tracking is highly capable, I recognised that activating it immediately could allow the autofocus system to lock onto the surrounding vegetation instead of the bird because of the visually busy background. Instead, I first activated Wide-area AF (Large) using a customised function button while maintaining continuous autofocus through the dedicated AF-ON control. Once focus had been positively acquired, I immediately handed autofocus over to 3D Tracking, allowing the camera to continue following the bird as it approached.
At the same time, I switched to Highlight-weighted Metering because the darker background occupied most of the frame while the bird's predominantly white plumage remained brightly illuminated. Matrix Metering would likely have increased the exposure in response to the dark surroundings, risking the loss of delicate feather detail. By combining an informed autofocus strategy with an exposure decision tailored to the scene, the resulting photograph remained both sharply focused and accurately exposed despite the rapidly changing conditions.
RAW Workflow & Image Processing
The photographic process does not end when the shutter is released. RAW capture preserves extensive image information for subsequent interpretation, while a disciplined processing workflow determines how that information is developed into the finished photograph. This section explores how capture format, bit depth, colour information, tonal recovery, and processing decisions work together from camera to final output.
I deliberately photograph in NEF/RAW rather than JPEG because the original RAW file retains substantially more information and processing flexibility than a finished, compressed JPEG. My Nikon cameras are configured for 14-bit lossless compressed RAW capture, allowing the recorded image data to be preserved efficiently without introducing lossy compression into the original capture. This gives me greater latitude when refining exposure, highlights, shadows, colour, and tonal transitions during post-processing.
I also set the camera's Picture Control to Neutral when capturing RAW images. Although Picture Control does not permanently determine the rendered appearance of a RAW file in the same way it does for an in-camera JPEG, using a neutral camera preview provides a less aggressively interpreted reference while evaluating the scene and the histogram. This supports a more objective assessment of the captured information rather than encouraging decisions based primarily on an already processed preview.
Once the RAW file is opened in Adobe Camera Raw, I work in a 16-bit processing environment. The greater numerical precision available at this stage provides substantially more room for tonal and colour adjustments and helps maintain smooth gradations during extensive editing. After the RAW development is complete, I render the finished photographs as 8-bit JPEG files when a compact, widely compatible delivery format is required.
This creates a deliberate workflow:
14-bit lossless RAW capture → 16-bit RAW development and editing → 8-bit JPEG delivery
Each stage serves a different purpose. The original RAW file preserves the captured information, the 16-bit working environment provides greater precision while that information is being interpreted, and the final JPEG is produced only after the image has been developed and refined.
In Practice
Recovering Tonal Detail Without Replacing Good Exposure
Wildlife photography frequently involves scenes containing deep shadows and bright highlights simultaneously. In such situations, I make exposure and metering decisions in-camera to protect important highlight information, while accepting that some shadow areas may initially appear darker than the final photograph requires.
During RAW processing, those shadow areas can then be lifted while retaining the highlight information deliberately protected during capture. This workflow is particularly valuable in wildlife and bird photography, where feathers, reflective water, bright skies, or backlit subjects can contain delicate highlight detail that should not be sacrificed merely to make darker surroundings appear brighter.
The important distinction is that post-processing completes the tonal interpretation of a carefully captured image; it does not replace the exposure decision made in the field.
In Practice
Why RAW Matters for Colour and White Balance
The importance of RAW capture also becomes evident when accurate colour reproduction is required. During commercial garment photography, I use a Grey Card as a reference under the shooting light and capture the images in Nikon's NEF RAW format. This provides a reliable basis for correcting white balance and maintaining colour consistency during processing.
The Grey Card establishes a known reference, while RAW preserves the flexibility needed to interpret that reference during post-processing. This is particularly important when photographing garments whose colours need to remain faithful to the actual products rather than merely appearing visually pleasing on screen.
In Practice
Preserving Information Before Processing Begins
The value of this workflow becomes particularly apparent in photographs containing difficult combinations of highlights and shadows. During bird and wildlife photography, I may deliberately expose to protect bright plumage, reflective water, or other critical highlights, knowing that darker areas can subsequently be lifted during RAW processing.
This approach works because the decisions made at capture and the possibilities available during processing complement one another. I do not depend on post-processing to repair an incorrectly exposed photograph; instead, I use the RAW file's retained information to develop a technically considered capture into its final tonal interpretation.
The same principle applies to colour. In commercial garment photography, for example, a Grey Card provides a reference for accurate colour interpretation, while the RAW workflow preserves the flexibility required to apply that reference consistently during processing. This connects the capture stage, colour science, and post-production into one continuous workflow rather than treating editing as a separate corrective exercise.

The comparison illustrates the difference in processing latitude between a JPEG-based workflow and a RAW workflow. The JPEG has already undergone in-camera processing and compression, leaving less information and flexibility for substantial tonal and colour refinement. The RAW workflow retains considerably greater latitude for developing the captured information, allowing tonal relationships, colour, contrast and shadow detail to be refined more extensively before the final image is rendered for delivery.

Creative Decisions & Composition
Composition is not simply the arrangement of subjects within a frame. It is the process of deciding what the photograph needs to communicate, then controlling viewpoint, camera height, focal length, distance and framing so that the visual structure supports that meaning. A technically successful image can still fail compositionally if the frame does not reveal the story the photographer intends to tell.
A scene rarely presents itself as a finished photograph. The photographer must interpret what is happening and decide how the viewer should encounter it through the frame. That may require moving closer or farther away, changing camera height, altering perspective, adjusting focal length, or deliberately including elements that might otherwise be considered distractions.
For me, composition therefore begins with seeing the photographic possibility within a scene. Once the intended story becomes clear, technical and physical decisions follow. The position of the camera, the relationship between subject and surroundings, the amount of environmental context retained, and even the timing of the frame all contribute to how that story is communicated.
This approach is particularly important in wildlife photography, where the photographer often has very little control over the subject itself. The bird may not move where expected, but the photographer can still control viewpoint, framing and focal length. Composition then becomes an active process of adapting to the subject rather than waiting for a theoretically perfect arrangement to appear.
In Practice
When the Story Determines the Composition
During a photography tour in the Himalayan region of Jhandi, Kalimpong, I noticed a group of Whiskered Yuhinas using an earthen water pot placed above a bamboo structure behind the Eco Hut Resort. The arrangement had been created so that birds could drink, but one of the birds was doing something rather different—it was enthusiastically bathing and splashing water around itself.
The moment immediately suggested a story to me: the water had been provided for drinking, but the bird had discovered an opportunity for a bath. I wanted the photograph to communicate that playful behaviour rather than simply record a bird sitting on a pot.
My original position was too low to reveal the surface of the water properly. From there, I would have mostly seen the bird's head and upper body, losing the visual evidence of the bath. I therefore moved rapidly to a higher balcony passage where I could obtain a more elevated viewpoint and see the water surface from above.
Even from there, the first position was not right. I was getting an unhelpful rear view of the bird, so I repositioned again, moving towards the extreme left of the passage until the relationship between the bird, the water-filled pot and the surrounding environment became visually meaningful.
The next problem was framing. At 600mm, the initial frames were too tight. Although the bird was prominent, the composition did not tell enough of the story. I deliberately reduced the focal length to bring the pot, surrounding vegetation, water splashes and airborne droplets into the frame. Those additional elements were not merely background; they were part of the narrative.
The result was therefore not simply a photograph of a Whiskered Yuhina. The final composition communicates a bird unexpectedly turning a drinking-water arrangement into a place for playful bathing.

Observation is the stage before the photograph. It involves watching a subject long enough to understand its behaviour, movement, interaction with its environment, and changing relationship with the surroundings. Patience is therefore not simply waiting for something to happen; it is the ability to remain attentive while gathering enough information to recognise what may happen next.
In wildlife photography, observation often provides information that cannot be obtained from the camera itself. A subject may reveal a repeated movement, return to a particular location, respond to something in its surroundings, or display behaviour that suggests an event is about to unfold. Recognising these patterns allows the photographer to prepare before the decisive moment rather than merely react after it has begun.
Patience also requires the photographer to become part of the environment without unnecessarily disturbing it. Body movement, position, clothing, camera handling and even the apparent size of the photographer can influence how closely a wild subject allows the photographer to remain. Remaining still and unobtrusive can therefore become a practical photographic technique in itself.
My approach is to treat observation as an active process: watch, interpret, form a hypothesis, wait, verify, and then respond. The longer the observation continues, the more informed the eventual photographic decision can become.
In Practice
When Patience Becomes Anticipation
During the monsoon season, I regularly spend time observing birds in a marshy wetland habitat behind Nandan Pahar in Deoghar. The area attracts a variety of birds, including egrets, munias, prinias, ducks, jacanas and waterhens. I was sitting quietly one day when I noticed a Cattle Egret repeatedly hovering above the area in front of me before returning to a distant perch.
At first, there appeared to be nothing particularly remarkable about the behaviour. The Egret was a very common bird, and it would have been easy to dismiss the activity and look elsewhere for a more unusual subject. Instead, I continued watching.
The pattern gradually became interesting. The Egret repeatedly returned to the same general area. On one occasion it landed close to me, carefully examined the grass, and then flew back to its perch. This suggested that something on the ground was attracting its attention.
Rather than immediately photographing the bird, I changed my own behaviour. I reduced my body movement, lowered myself to appear less imposing, concealed the large camera and lens beneath my folded arms and moved slightly backwards towards the surrounding vegetation. My camouflage clothing and the thick green bushes behind me provided additional visual cover.
The Egret disappeared from my immediate view, but the observation had already given me a hypothesis: something on the ground was probably attracting it.
I carefully scanned the grass with my Nikon Z9 and NIKKOR Z 180–600mm at 600mm, using DX mode to increase the effective field of view for locating the subject. I discovered a frog moving with an injured or impaired leg. The connection suddenly became clear—the frog was almost certainly the reason for the Egret's repeated attention.
I then waited.
People subsequently crossed the area, temporarily preventing the Egret from returning. Instead of abandoning the opportunity, I continued observing. Once the people moved away, the Egret returned, landed, and began slowly scanning the grass.
At that point, my observation had developed into anticipation. I expected the Egret to attempt to catch the frog and knew that the behaviour could change very quickly. I increased the shutter speed and prepared my autofocus controls. When the Egret finally caught the frog, it attempted to swallow it several times, dropping it repeatedly.
Then the behaviour changed again.
I anticipated that the Egret might take flight, possibly still carrying the frog. The bird was already in focus, so I handed autofocus control over to my assigned 3D Tracking setting. The Egret took off, and I continued shooting through the sequence.
The resulting photograph captured the Egret in flight with the frog still hanging from its beak.
What This Experience Demonstrates
The photograph was not created by patience alone.
It resulted from a chain of observations:
Repeated hovering → repeated return to the same area → investigation of the grass → discovery of the frog → prediction of the Egret's return → waiting through interruption → anticipation of the attack → preparation for rapid movement → capture of the flight.
The camera recorded the final fraction of a second, but the photograph was effectively prepared several minutes earlier through observation.
That is why I regard patience in wildlife photography as an active skill rather than passive waiting. The photographer is continuously collecting information, testing assumptions and preparing for possibilities while the subject remains unpredictable.

The subject was common. The behaviour was not.

Visual Storytelling
A photograph can show what happened without necessarily communicating why the moment matters. Visual storytelling begins when the elements within a frame work together to convey context, activity, emotion, relationship or meaning. The photographer is therefore not only recording a moment, but selecting and organising visual information so that a viewer can understand something about that moment without having been there.
For me, visual storytelling often begins with noticing the significance of an ordinary moment. A scene does not need to be dramatic or unusual to carry a story. Sometimes the story lies in an everyday activity that people have become so accustomed to seeing that its significance is easily overlooked.
The challenge is then to photograph that activity in a way that preserves its context as well as its action. The surroundings can establish where the event is taking place, while the subject's gesture, expression or movement can reveal what is happening. Foreground and background can provide additional layers of information rather than simply serving as decoration.
I also believe that storytelling photographs should allow the viewer to discover the narrative rather than having every detail explained to them. A carefully chosen moment can suggest a larger story beyond the boundaries of the frame.

In Practice
When an Ordinary Moment Carries a Larger Story
I frequently visit Baghmari village, around 13 kilometres from Deoghar, particularly during winter when its pond attracts migratory birds such as Bar-headed Geese, Greylag Geese, Ruddy Shelducks and Great Cormorants.
One winter morning I arrived early, as I often do, but the birds had not yet arrived. While walking around the pond, I noticed a farmer winnowing harvested paddy.
He was repeatedly shaking a bamboo winnowing tray, allowing the heavier grains to fall while the lighter husk and straw fragments were carried sideways by the movement and air. The falling grains immediately caught my attention. But as I looked around, I realised that the scene offered a much larger visual story: the farmer was surrounded by harvested paddy, with the blue pond behind him and the rural landscape extending beyond it.
I did not want to photograph only the farmer. I wanted the photograph to communicate the work.
I therefore spent some time moving left and right, studying how the elements could come together. From one position, the pond became a clean blue background behind the falling grains and the farmer, while the edge of the pond created a natural visual line through the scene.
I then noticed that the harvested paddy in front of me could become an important foreground element. By positioning myself behind the paddy piles and using a shallow depth of field, I could allow the foreground to become soft and indistinct while keeping the farmer clearly separated against the pond.
The resulting visual structure gave the photograph three distinct layers:
soft harvested paddy in the foreground → farmer and falling grain in the middle → blue pond and landscape in the background.
The technical decision supported the storytelling decision. I focused on the farmer's eye while keeping the foreground close to the camera's focal plane, allowing it to dissolve into blur. This isolated the farmer and his action without removing him from his environment.
There was another reason for remaining concealed. I did not want him to notice me and change his natural behaviour by looking towards the camera.
While observing him, I had noticed that he repeatedly closed his eyes while shaking the tray. I understood that this was probably to protect his eyes from the dust, husk and fine particles flying from the paddy.
That observation gave me another opportunity.
I waited behind the harvested paddy. When he began the action and his eyes naturally closed, I rose, captured several frames while the grains were falling, and then lowered myself again before the tray became empty. I repeated this sequence several times until I obtained the frame I wanted.
The resulting photograph was therefore not simply about a farmer winnowing paddy.
It was about the largely unseen human effort behind something that is ordinary in our daily lives: the food that eventually reaches our tables.
The piles of harvested paddy suggest the scale of the work. The raised arms and repeated movement suggest the physical effort. The falling grain records the process itself. And the farmer's presence within the agricultural landscape connects the final product we casually purchase with the labour involved in producing it.
What I wanted the viewer to see
I wanted the photograph to make the viewer pause for a moment and think about something that is usually invisible in everyday life.
Rice is easily purchased in a market, packaged and carried home. But before it reaches that stage, there are people who spend hours performing repetitive, physically demanding work like harvesting, drying, sorting and winnowing.
The photograph therefore became a way of giving visual importance to work that is essential, yet often overlooked.
That, for me, is where visual storytelling becomes meaningful: the photograph does not merely show an activity; it gives the activity a context and invites the viewer to think about what lies behind it.
Professional Practice & Case Studies
Professional photography involves far more than operating a camera and producing technically sound images. It requires understanding a client's expectations, communicating clearly, recognising changing circumstances, solving problems responsibly, adapting the photographic approach and remaining focused on the intended outcome. The following real-world case studies document how these decisions have shaped my professional practice during assignments in and around Deoghar.
Professional Practice in the Real World
A professional assignment rarely unfolds exactly according to the original plan. A subject may become uncomfortable, environmental conditions may change, a location may not work as expected, or a planned approach may suddenly become impractical.
My approach is to treat these situations as photographic problems to be solved rather than reasons to compromise the assignment unnecessarily.
That requires more than technical knowledge. It requires observation, communication, judgement and the ability to develop an alternative approach quickly while keeping the client's comfort, expectations and the purpose of the assignment in mind.
The following cases illustrate this approach through actual assignments rather than general claims about professional service.
Case Study 1 — Adapting to an Uncomfortable Subject During a Live Ceremony
Assignment : Thread Ceremony Photography
Location : Baidyanath Dham Temple, Deoghar
Subject : Approximately 12-year-old boy
Challenge : Ritual smoke causing eye irritation and affecting expressions
Professional response : Communication, rapid problem-solving and adaptation
Outcome : Important ceremonial moments were successfully documented
The assignment was a traditional Thread Ceremony (Janeu) held at Baidyanath Dham Temple in Deoghar for a family visiting from the United States.
The boy was around twelve years old. Having grown up outside India, he was visibly less accustomed to the long and unfamiliar sequence of traditional rituals. He was not being disobedient; he simply appeared restless and uncomfortable as the ceremony continued.
During the Yagna, the small room gradually filled with smoke from the sacred fire. The smoke began irritating his eyes, causing him to close them repeatedly in an unusual manner. His father and the priest tried to reassure him and encourage him to keep his eyes open, but the discomfort continued.
This created a genuine photographic problem.
The ceremony was continuing, and important moments were unfolding, but the subject's discomfort was affecting his expressions. His parents even suggested that I should simply avoid taking photographs during that portion because the resulting images might not look good.
I could have accepted the situation as unavoidable.
Instead, I remembered that I had photographed the family in a biographic portrait session the previous day, during which the boy had worn a pair of black sunglasses.
An alternative immediately occurred to me: rather than missing the moments altogether, why not adapt the situation and allow him to wear the sunglasses during the smoky portion of the ritual?
I discussed the idea with his parents rather than imposing it on them. They immediately agreed. I then communicated the solution to the priest, who also agreed to pause the chanting briefly while the boy's mother brought the sunglasses.
The ceremony resumed, and I continued photographing.
The sunglasses did not remove every visible sign of discomfort, but they solved the immediate problem sufficiently to allow the important moments to be documented rather than lost.
What this case demonstrates
This was not primarily a camera-setting problem. It was a people-and-situation problem.
The solution required me to:

recognise the actual cause affecting the photographs;
-
remember relevant information from the previous day's assignment;
-
develop an alternative quickly;
-
communicate the idea to the parents;
-
coordinate with the priest;
-
respect the child's comfort;
-
and continue documenting the ceremony without turning the situation into a source of stress for the family.
Professional practice, in this situation, meant taking responsibility for finding a workable solution instead of simply explaining why the photographs could not be made.

Case Study 2 — Designing the Photograph Around the Client
Assignment : Maternity Photography
Location : A private natural location on the outskirts of Deoghar
Challenge : Privacy requirements followed by physical exhaustion during the shoot
Professional response : Location planning, client communication and redesigning the photographic approach
Outcome : A successful portrait created without forcing the client into uncomfortable poses
Before the maternity session, the client explained that she would not be comfortable photographing in a place where unknown people were present.
That requirement became part of the assignment itself.
Rather than asking her to compromise, I looked for a location where privacy could be maintained. I arranged access to a suitable natural setting on the outskirts of Deoghar, with forest surroundings, hills, a park-like environment, changing facilities and security. After discussing the requirement with the concerned Range Forest Officer and obtaining permission, the location was finalised.
The client and her husband were comfortable with the arrangement.
The assignment, however, presented another unexpected challenge on the day of the shoot.
The client was in the final stage of pregnancy and began becoming exhausted very quickly. After a few photographs, she was visibly tired and needed to lie down. Her husband helped her rest, and both of them appeared disappointed because they assumed that the planned session might have to end.
I understood both the physical difficulty and the disappointment.
Rather than asking her to recover and resume the originally planned poses, I paused the session and gave her time to rest. I also stepped away with my lighting assistant so that she could relax without feeling that she needed to continue performing for the camera.
While she rested, I reconsidered the entire photographic approach.
The question became:
Could I create a meaningful couple's portrait without requiring her to stand, sit or repeatedly change position?
The answer was yes.
I approached the couple again and explained the alternative concept. The client could remain in a comfortable lying position, while her husband could be positioned naturally beside her.
Once they agreed, I redesigned the lighting rather than the client having to accommodate the lighting.
I used a Godox AD300 Pro as the key light and a Godox TT685N mounted on a boom arm as a backlight, operated remotely through the lighting system. The backlight was positioned to create a subtle rim around the couple, helping separate them from the surrounding environment.
The resulting photograph became one of the strongest images from the session.
The client later expressed something that stayed with me:
“You are a real and true professional who not only photographs people but create moments to be photographed.”
For me, that response was more meaningful than simply completing the assignment.
What this case demonstrates
The important decision here was not simply choosing a different pose.
It involved a sequence of professional decisions:
Client requirement → location solution → changing physical circumstance → pause and reassessment → alternative concept → client communication → lighting redesign → final photograph.
The original plan was changed, but the purpose of the assignment was not lost.
In fact, the unexpected circumstance produced a photograph that the client considered one of the best from the session.

What These Cases Reveal About My Professional Approach
These two assignments were very different.
One involved a live religious ceremony in Baidyanath Dham, where an uncomfortable young subject and smoky environment threatened the quality of fleeting moments.
The other involved a private maternity portrait session near Deoghar, where the client's privacy requirements and later physical exhaustion required the entire photographic approach to be reconsidered.
Yet the underlying professional process was similar:
Listen → observe → understand the constraint → communicate → develop a solution → adapt the technique → deliver the intended experience.
This is how I approach professional photography.
A client does not necessarily need a photographer who can follow a predetermined plan perfectly. Real assignments rarely behave that way. What matters is having sufficient experience and understanding to recognise when the original plan is no longer appropriate—and sufficient judgement to develop a better one.
For me, client satisfaction is not achieved by simply giving the client what was originally discussed. It is achieved by understanding what the client ultimately needs from the photographic experience and finding a responsible way to deliver it.
A Broader Professional Principle
My professional experience across portraits, family-biographic photography, maternity sessions, ceremonies, products, rural life, wildlife and other genres has reinforced one principle:
The camera is only one part of professional photography.
Technical knowledge makes it possible to control light, exposure, focus, colour and image quality. Experience makes it possible to recognise what needs to change. Communication makes it possible to work with people. And problem-solving makes it possible to continue when circumstances do not cooperate.
That combination is what turns photographic knowledge into professional practice.

Equipment as a Photographic System
Equipment & Workflow
Equipment is not a substitute for photographic knowledge. It is a system of tools through which technical understanding, creative intention and professional workflow are translated into a finished photograph. I therefore select and configure my equipment according to the demands of the assignment—whether the priority is speed and autofocus, focal-length flexibility, controlled lighting, accurate exposure, colour consistency, reliable data capture or precise post-processing.
My equipment has evolved around the different demands of the photography I practise. Wildlife and bird photography can require fast autofocus, high frame rates, long focal lengths and rapid control changes, while portraits, maternity, ceremonies and commercial assignments may require controlled lighting, accurate metering, modifiers and deliberate positioning of light.
My primary camera system includes the Nikon Z9, supported by the Nikon D850 as a second professional camera body. My lens collection covers different photographic requirements, including the NIKKOR Z 180–600mm for distant wildlife and other long-distance subjects, the AF-S NIKKOR 70–200mm f/2.8 for portraits and compression, the AF-S NIKKOR 24–120mm f/4 for versatile coverage, the 105mm Micro-NIKKOR for macro and close-detail work, and a 50mm f/1.8 prime for situations where a fast aperture and natural perspective are useful.
The equipment, however, becomes meaningful only when I understand what problem each tool is solving.
A long telephoto lens can provide working distance and subject isolation, but it does not predict movement. A flagship autofocus system can track a subject, but it still depends on the photographer choosing an appropriate AF strategy. A powerful strobe can illuminate a subject, but understanding light direction, quality, intensity and the relationship between ambient and artificial light determines whether that illumination actually serves the photograph.
This is why I consider equipment selection part of photographic decision-making rather than a separate technical exercise.
Lighting as Part of the Workflow
Lighting is an especially important part of my professional workflow.
My lighting system includes Elinchrom strobes, Godox AD300 Pro, Godox TT685N and other flashes, along with wireless triggers, light meters and modifiers such as softboxes, reflectors, grids and diffusers.
I use these tools differently according to the photographic requirement.
For example, in daylight portrait and maternity photography, the aim may be to balance ambient exposure with controlled off-camera flash. In a studio or indoor environment, the priority may instead be precise control over the direction, softness, fall-off and ratio of multiple light sources.
The Sekonic L-308X becomes particularly useful when I need measured control rather than relying entirely on the camera's reflected-light metering. In a controlled lighting situation, measurement provides a repeatable reference from which I can determine the relationship between ambient light and flash exposure.
This approach allows lighting equipment to become part of a repeatable workflow, rather than something added simply to make a photograph appear brighter.

From Camera Capture to Final Image
My workflow does not end when the shutter is released.
I generally capture photographs in Nikon NEF/RAW format, retaining the sensor data for subsequent processing rather than allowing the camera to make the final JPEG interpretation at the moment of capture. My Services page documents the reasons for this approach, including greater control over tonal information, colour, white balance, highlight and shadow recovery, and subsequent image refinement.
I process RAW files using Adobe Camera Raw and other professional post-processing tools according to the requirements of the image. My post-processing ecosystem also includes Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Topaz Photo AI, Nik Collection by DxO and Imagenomic Portraiture.
The purpose of this workflow is not to manufacture information that was never captured.
Instead, RAW processing allows me to interpret and refine the information recorded by the camera—recovering appropriate tonal detail, correcting colour and white balance, controlling contrast, refining sharpness and preparing the image for its intended final use.
This is particularly important in photographs where the lighting conditions are challenging. A carefully exposed RAW file gives considerably more latitude for controlled refinement than a heavily processed JPEG.

A Workflow Designed for Consistency
Professional photography also requires reliability beyond the visible photograph.
My workflow therefore includes high-speed memory cards, multiple storage and backup considerations, camera protection, cleaning and maintenance equipment, and professional support tools. The Services page documents my use of ProGrade CFexpress Type B, Sony XQD and SanDisk SDHC/UHS-II media, along with camera bags, weather protection, tripods, monopods and equipment-maintenance tools.
These may appear less glamorous than cameras and lenses, but they are part of professional reliability.
A photograph that cannot be safely recorded, transferred, processed or preserved is not a successful professional workflow.
Equipment Decisions Are Situation-Dependent
One of the most important lessons from years of photography is that there is no single "best" piece of equipment for every photographic situation.
The same camera, lens or light can behave very differently depending on:

subject distance;
-
subject movement;
-
available light;
-
background complexity;
-
required depth of field;
-
working space;
-
desired perspective;
-
privacy and client comfort;
-
required shutter speed;
-
final output;
-
and the amount of control available to the photographer.
This is why I prefer to think in terms of a system rather than individual pieces of equipment.
The camera records the information.
The lens determines how the scene is optically represented.
The lighting system controls or modifies illumination.
The metering tools provide measurable reference.
The photographer makes the decisions.
The RAW workflow preserves and refines the captured information.
And the final output determines how that information is prepared for the viewer.
What Equipment Cannot Replace
Professional equipment provides capability, but capability is not competence.
A Nikon Z9 does not automatically produce a correctly exposed bird in flight. A 600mm lens does not automatically produce effective subject separation. A Godox AD300 Pro does not automatically create flattering portrait light. A Sekonic light meter does not decide where the light should be placed.
Those decisions still depend upon understanding light, exposure, optics, autofocus, subject behaviour, composition, colour and the purpose of the photograph.
This is why the equipment documented on my Services page should be understood as the physical foundation of my workflow—not as a replacement for the knowledge and experience developed through years of photographic practice.
The Complete Workflow
For me, the professional photographic workflow can therefore be understood as a continuous chain:
Understand the assignment → select the appropriate equipment → configure the camera → observe the light and subject → make exposure and focus decisions → capture RAW data → process and refine the image → prepare the appropriate final output → preserve the work reliably.
Every stage affects the next.
A weakness at the capture stage can restrict post-processing. Poor lighting can create problems that editing cannot genuinely solve. Incorrect focus cannot be repaired simply by increasing sharpening. And excessive editing cannot replace thoughtful exposure and colour decisions made at capture.
The objective is therefore not to own more equipment. It is to understand the equipment deeply enough to know when, why and how each tool should be used.
Photography Ethics
Photography gives a photographer the ability to observe, interpret and preserve moments that may never happen again. That ability also carries responsibility. For me, ethical photography means respecting the subject, understanding the circumstances in which a photograph is made, communicating honestly with people, and recognising when the photograph should give way to the welfare, dignity or natural behaviour of the subject.
A photograph is never more important than the subject it records. Whether photographing wildlife, people, communities or everyday life, I believe responsible photography begins with observation, patience and respect—and extends into how the resulting image is presented and processed.
Case Study 1 — Knowing When to Step Back
In Practice
While photographing birds in an open field at Kumaitha, Deoghar, I noticed a group of Red-wattled Lapwings spread across the grassland. I slowly approached them, keeping my body low and moving carefully so that I could get closer without disturbing them.
As I came nearer, however, I noticed something unusual. Two birds were positioned near the centre of the group—one standing alert while the other appeared to be sitting on the ground. The surrounding birds began giving sharp alarm calls, and some started flying and hovering overhead.
Looking carefully through my Nikon Z9 with the NIKKOR Z 180–600mm lens, I realised what was happening: the apparently sitting bird had been guarding a nest, and once it stood up, several eggs became visible among the small stones.
At that moment, getting closer for a better photograph was no longer an option. The behaviour of the birds had already told me that my presence was causing concern.
I immediately withdrew from the area rather than risk disturbing the nesting birds.
The photograph I could have made was not worth compromising a nesting site or causing unnecessary stress to the birds. For me, this is an important part of wildlife photography: knowing not only how to approach a subject, but also when to stop approaching.
Case Study 2 — Trust Before the Photograph
In Practice
During a rural photography visit to the Santhali village of Sujani, Deoghar, I noticed an elderly woman cutting grass for cattle while her husband sat nearby. The character and expression of her face immediately caught my attention.
When she noticed my camera, however, she became nervous and asked what I was photographing.
Instead of immediately raising the camera, I stopped and spoke with her. I explained why I visit the village, what I photograph and that I had no malicious intention. We spoke about her daily life, family and routine for several minutes. Her husband also recognised me from my earlier visits to the village, which helped establish further familiarity.
Only after she became comfortable did I ask whether she would allow me to make her portrait. I explained that I would not misuse the photograph and offered to bring her a printed copy when I returned to the village.
She agreed.
I then suggested a simple pose involving her saree. She initially became shy and laughed, but gradually followed the guidance. That moment of natural shyness produced the expression I had hoped to preserve.
The resulting portrait became possible not because I had simply found an interesting face, but because I first created enough trust for the person behind the face to feel comfortable being photographed.
For me, photographing people responsibly means recognising that a camera gives me no automatic right to someone's image. Communication and consent are part of the photographic process.

Case Study 3 — Preserving What the Photograph Actually Records
In Practice
During a safari in Manas National Park in 2020, I photographed a small elephant family—a mother, father and their young calf.
The adult elephants had patches of dark, dry mud and natural marks across their bodies. A few twigs and vegetation were also visible close to them in the frame.
From a purely aesthetic perspective, these elements could easily have been removed during post-processing. Cleaning the bodies and eliminating the distracting vegetation might have produced a more polished-looking photograph.
I deliberately chose not to do so.
Those marks, mud patches and surrounding vegetation were part of the environment in which I encountered the elephants. Removing them would have made the photograph visually cleaner, but it would also have moved the image further away from what the camera actually recorded.
For wildlife documentation, authenticity matters more to me than artificial perfection.
My processing can refine exposure, colour, tonal balance and presentation, but I do not want post-processing to manufacture a cleaner reality than the one I witnessed.

What These Cases Reveal About My Ethical Approach
These experiences illustrate three different responsibilities that I believe come with photography: responsibility towards wildlife, responsibility towards people, and responsibility towards the truth represented by an image.
With wildlife, that responsibility may mean walking away from a photograph when continued presence could cause disturbance.
With people, it may mean putting the camera down first, communicating, building trust and seeking permission before making the photograph.
With image processing, it may mean resisting the temptation to remove natural details simply because they make an image less visually perfect.
Technical knowledge tells me how a photograph can be made. Ethical judgement helps me decide whether, when and how it should be made.
A Broader Professional Principle
For me, responsible photography is not about following a rigid set of rules. It is about being observant enough to recognise circumstances, respectful enough to respond appropriately, and honest enough to preserve the integrity of what I photograph.
The photograph matters. But the subject, the moment, the people involved and the environment matter more.
The Thinking Behind the Photograph
Photography, for me, is an evolving practice of observation, understanding and decision-making. The final image is only the visible result of everything that happens before and around the shutter release—from recognising a moment and understanding the subject, to choosing the right approach, adapting to circumstances, solving unexpected challenges and knowing when to step back.
These experiences continue to shape how I photograph. The camera records the moment, but thoughtful photography begins with understanding it.
